Candace Chan ’13, PharmD is giving back to her alma mater as a pharmacy preceptor. Dr. Chan was recognized as the 2019 Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) Preceptor of the Year for the Sacramento region. She is an inpatient pharmacist at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Dr. Chan shared she learns just as much from the students as they learn from her. She enjoys building relationships with her students and finds it very rewarding to watch their knowledge and confidence grow throughout their rotation. With her students, she stresses the importance of diligently seeking knowledge beyond the surface level to gain a deeper understanding of the material. “It is ok to not always have the answer, but it is crucial to recognize that gap in knowledge and be resourceful to find the solution in a timely manner,” said Dr. Chan.

Her students observed that Dr. Chan gives both constructive feedback and words of encouragement. One of her students said, “She is absolutely the kind of pharmacist I want to be one day — smart, resourceful and kind. She also collaborates with other health care professionals. She is a wonderful teacher and can explain difficult concepts. I know she genuinely cares about being a great mentor and preceptor.”
